Miami Ad Design

This project was for a fictional client that wanted to describe the city of Miami through a poster. I was given a creative brief, and several parameters to work with.

Because the brief stated that the project would be to “visually stimulate” astronauts on the moon, my first goal was to layer the composition with different levels of complexity, so that it not be “boring”.
My composition is centered around a map, and built up from there.
I wanted to accurately express the nature of the different neighborhoods of Miami, and show the city as a vibrant, historical and growing city.

I began by reading about the history of Miami. I learned several interesting things.
Miami was one of the only major cities founded by a woman (Julia Tuttle).
Miami is best described as a “Cultural Mosaic”, and not a “Melting Pot” since ethnicities and nationalities tend to stay intact here.
Miami is the only city bordered by two national parks: Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park.

First, I wanted to show the state of Florida, and superimpose lines and images in different places to form a sort of “Miami Collage”. In all of my sketches, there had to be a heron.
I later changed course, focusing only on the city of Miami. I wanted to show the neighborhoods from early on. Theidea of complexity was still there. I wanted lots of lines in my composition.

I finally settled on this image to form the base of my composition. It’s an old aviation map, showing the city of Miami.

The lines provided exactly what I needed to create the base of my design. I then decided to use a tree as the focal point of the composition. It would be a large banyan tree that encompassed the city, with various things either coming out of the tree, or under it.

After several revisions, I came to this design. Click the image to see it in Flickr.
